Today, most pastors will say they believe the church should not be involved in politics because they are "not called to do so." They frequently quote the great commission of Jesus Christ “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” but, in order to justify themselves they purposely conceal the second half of the command that says “and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” The truth is they cannot legally endorse or contribute to political candidates, they cannot campaign for specific legislation, because they are legally forbidden to become directly involved in the political process since they have waived their Constitutional rights in order to receive the 501 (c) (3) tax exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service.
Every single church in America applied voluntarily to receive 501 (c) (3) Tax-Exempt status, so when pastors tell you they don't believe the church should be involved in civil politics, the truth is their religious practice is actually in voluntary conformity to what the state has imposed as a condition of receiving their non-profit tax status.
The Bible teaches us that Jesus Christ is the head of the church, Ephesians 5:23, “For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.” An incorporated church in the other hand is in every sense under the control and direction of its creator, the U.S. Government, Legally, Ethically, Morally, Financially, and Spiritually, after all, the belief of non-political involvement in government is a doctrine imposed on the corporate church by its creator, the State.

When the church leaders apply to receive the tax exemption, they are actually forfeiting their tax immunity under the Constitution. The difference between immunity and exemption is subtle.
To be immune from state regulation is to be completely free from the power of the State to regulate or affect one's behavior in any way. To be exempt is to submit to that power with the promise of exemption from portions of that power. In effect, Pastors are saying to the government, "We agree you have power over us, but in exchange for your exempting us from your lawful right to tax us, we will agree not to oppose your power."
In essence, they have voluntarily betrayed Jesus Christ for thirty pieces of silver all over again. Many falsely teach total submission to the governing authorities, according to Romans 13, “Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience,” but the Bible also teaches in Romans 6:16, “Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey, whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness”?

Yes, Christians will be persecuted here in the United States of America. Did the church ever need to seek permission from the U.S. Government to be exempt from taxes? Were churches prior to 1954 taxable? No, churches have never been taxable. To be taxable a church would first need to be under the jurisdiction of the taxing authority of the U.S. Government, but the First Amendment clearly places the church outside the jurisdiction of the civil government, which reads in part “congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, NOR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF”
Not only it is completely unnecessary for any Christian Church to seek IRS 501c3 Tax-Exempt Status, but also any church that obtains that favor, must surrender her voice to the authority and control of the IRS. In the words of Steve Nestor, IRS Sr. Revenue Officer (ret.): "I am not the only IRS employee who’s wondered why churches go to the government and seek permission to be exempted from a tax they didn’t owe to begin with, and to seek IRS 501 (c) (3) Tax-Exempt Status that they’ve always had anyway. Many of us have marveled at how church leaders want to be regulated and controlled by an agency of government that most Americans have prayed would just get out of their lives. Churches are in an amazingly unique position, but they don’t seem to know or appreciate the implications of what it would mean to be free of government control."
When a church accepts the IRS 501 (c) (3) Tax-Exempt Status, that church becomes a United States Church, and waives its Freedom of Speech, waives its Freedom of Religion, waives its Right to Influence Legislators and waives its Constitutional Guaranteed Rights. The church is no longer free to speak against society’s Immoral Issues, and becomes controlled by a spirit of fear that if it does endorse political candidates, and attempts to affect legislation it will lose its IRS 501c3 Tax-Exempt Status.
